Waistcoats & Vests

History

Originating in Persia, waistcoats first became fashionable in the middle of the seventeenth century. King Charles II was persuaded that after the plague and the fire of London a more somber form of attire should be worn by gentlemen rather than the extravagance displayed in French courts at the time. The vest was knee length and followed the cut of the coat although it was a tighter fit. It was made from a plainer, cheaper material to discourage the lavish use of opulent fabrics, however, by 1670 it had become a real fashion trend across Europe and as such excessive decoration was introduced.

1700-1900

By 1700 the waistcoat had become shorter (above the knee)and collars began to appear. Whereas elaborately embroidered waistcoats were fastened with hooks and eyes, the majority were fastened with buttons that would match those of the coat being worn.

Double breasted waistcoats were the most popular style during the first few decades of the eighteenth century and featured pockets with flaps. The length continued to shorten and by 1790 they were cut square to the waist.

By 1800 the waistcoat had become an increasingly decorative addition to a Gentlemans wardrobe. The general rule was, if it was flamboyant and over the top it was deemed fashionable. Wearing two at the same time was also popular, with the upper unbuttoned to show the one underneath.

After the mid-nineteenth century everything calmed down and waistcoats were less ostentatious. Most were produced to match jackets or trousers and the three piece suit was born.

1900s onwards

Although the waistcoat was still popular at the beginning of the twentieth century it became less fashionable and was considered a more functional garment, for example, to carry a pocket watch. Gradually it became a less than essential part of the male wardrobe.
